SAFEGUARDING POLICY
Rebecca Knowles Photography Safeguarding Policy
1. Purpose
This Safeguarding Policy outlines the commitment of Rebecca Knowles Photography to protect the welfare and rights of children, young people, and vulnerable adults encountered through photographic work. It ensures that all photography is conducted legally, ethically, and with due respect to the rights of individuals.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all photography sessions, whether they take place in a studio, on location, at events, or during client appointments. It is particularly relevant where children (under 18) or vulnerable adults are involved.
3. Commitment to Safeguarding
I am committed to promoting the safety, welfare, and dignity of all individuals.
- I will act responsibly and take steps to prevent harm, exploitation, or abuse.
- I will ensure photography sessions are carried out in a professional and respectful manner.
4. Legal Compliance
This policy complies with relevant UK legislation, including:
- The Children Act 1989 and 2004
- The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006
- Working Together to Safeguard Children (HM Government guidance)
- The Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR
- The Sexual Offences Act 2003
5. Photography Involving Children and Vulnerable Adults
When working with children or vulnerable adults:
- Consent: Written, informed consent will be obtained from a parent, guardian, or carer before any photography takes place.
- Supervision: A responsible adult (parent/guardian/carer) must be present during the session.
- Appropriate Behaviour: I will maintain professional boundaries and avoid any conduct that could be misinterpreted.
- Clothing & Poses: All subjects will be appropriately clothed, and all poses must be age-appropriate and respectful.
- Review of Images: Parents or guardians may request to review and approve images before use.
6. Use of Images
Images will only be used for the purposes agreed upon at the time of booking (e.g. personal use, portfolio, website, marketing).
No images of children or vulnerable adults will be published online or in promotional material without written consent.
All data, including photographs, will be stored securely and in accordance with data protection laws.
7. Reporting Concerns
If at any time a safeguarding concern arises (e.g., suspected abuse, inappropriate conduct, or disclosure from a client):
- I will take the concern seriously and act appropriately.
- Where necessary, I will report the matter to the relevant local authority safeguarding team or the police.
- I will co-operate with any investigations or proceedings.
- In an emergency, I will contact 999. For non-emergency safeguarding advice, I may consult the NSPCC Helpline (0808 800 5000) or the local authority’s designated safeguarding lead.
8. Training & Awareness
While not a regulated childcare provider, I recognise the importance of safeguarding training and awareness. I aim to stay informed on best practices and my legal responsibilities.
9. Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if there are significant changes in legislation or the nature of my work.
